A Brief History
In 1948 work began on the building of the Headstone Lane Estate - a project to provide homes for families who had lost their homes in the east end of London. Local Christians from North Harrow and Pinner saw this as an excellent opportunity to plant an "independent" church in this part of the borough.
In the initial stages open-air meetings were held on the estate before the church moved temporarily to Cedars School. The Chicheley Road site was acquired from the then London County Council and building work on a permanent church building began in November 1949. This building was opened almost two years later in September 1951 as “Oak Hall” Headstone Christian Fellowship. In 1958 the buildings were extended and the current main hall built. Unfortunately the oak, after which the hall was named, had to be removed to make way for the new building.
In its heyday the church could boast of over a hundred children in the Sunday School and one of the largest church youth groups in Harrow. However, times change, as do patterns of attendance and by 1984 attendance had fallen to a low ebb. Thanks to a group of Christians from North Harrow, who joined the church at the time, the work continued. In 1995 the church adopted the name Good News Church to reflect the “Good News“ that Jesus brings.
In 1998 Good News Church hosted the Bible Experience Exhibition and in 2006 the highly sucessful LIFE Exhibition. Over 1,000 children from Harrow schools attended each of these events.
The church has seen modest growth over the past few years and has, very recenty, teamed up with the London City Mission and appointed a full-time evangelist.
